U.S. 2 - Spain 0

I don’t watch much soccer. It’s a sport, like hockey and baseball, that is much more fun live then on tv (all sports, save boxing, wrestling,or any type of fighting preceded by a superlative, are more fun to play then watch).

So it may just be the small sample size talking, but the most exciting game I’ve watched to date was the game we played Italy, the eventual champs, to a draw in the 2006 World Cup (I’m not saying “match”). http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/4853182.stm

That being said, these last two Confederation Cup games, with the US beating Egypt 3-0 to reach the semis and just now upsetting Spain 2-0 to reach the finals, have been really (if randomly) exciting, especially considering we (ha) were playing pretty poorly as of late (see: losing to Costa Rica). I’m excited to watch them (better usage, I don’t play) try to hold on against Brazil (good luck). http://www.fifa.com/confederationscup/matches/index.html

All of this makes me really glad I spent the last 4 years meticulously saving and planning for a trip to South Africa for the 2010 World Cu…

Dammnit.

. . .

p.s. If you are an American, I think it’s totally cool to follow and root for another country, after all, we’re pretty apathetic about soccer. But when your adopted country plays the U.S.? C’mon! If you don’t cheer for the U.S. in that situation, you’re not allowed to bar-b-que anything ever again, or watch Michael Phelps swim/be creepy.

Here is how I follow any international soccer competition: 1) USA, 2) England, 3) Any Current British Holding, 4) Any Former British Holding, 193) Mexico.

ex: USA > England > Scotland > Austrailia > Anybody but Mexico > Mexico > Sudan/North Korea
